Coronary artery disease (CAD). Physical disruption of the atherosclerotic plaque underlies the formation of a flow-limiting thrombosis that causes acute coronary events. A plaque is constructed of a large lipid-rich & collagen-rich atheromatous core, which is separated from the vessel lumen by a thin fibrous cap. Fibrous caps are heavily infiltrated by macrophage foam cells & T-lymphocytes.

Myocardial infarction (MI). Polymorphonuclear leukocytes migrate from small vessels and infiltrate the myocardium about 6 hours after the ischemic episode and are found among the necrotic myocardial fibers, which have lost their nuclei and striations. The MI shown here occurred about 48-60 hours before specimen preparation. |
